PAST | GIGLI SI RACCONTA | UNTOLD STORIES ABOUT BENIAMINO GIGLI, 2021

We are pleased to announce the imminent release of " Gigli si racconta | Untold stories about Beniamino Gigli" on our website, Monday, February 15th. This is a documentary that focuses on personal stories about the great tenor, told from people who met him or from people who have dedicated their lives to conserve his memory.

Enzo Pizzimenti has traveled to Recanati, IT, birthplace of Beniamino Gigli. During the editing process we asked two of our young upcoming tenors to record for us arias and songs that belonged to Gigli's repertoire.
Arsen Stepanyan, is a young Armenian tenor. We heard him for first time in our 2020 International Competition. We can't wait to see him developing and to hopefully give him live performing opportunities with us and Teatro Grattacielo
Tenor Thomas Massey is a young tenor from Tampa, FL. Well known to our audiences throughout our 2019 and 2020 productions.
Professor Luigi Vincenzoni, known as Luigino, was Gigli's beloved nephew
Pierluca Trucchia is the President of the Benianino Gigli Association in Recanati

Beniamino Gigli, (born March 20, 1890, Recanati, near Ancona, Italy—died Nov. 30, 1957, Rome), one of the greatest Italian operatic tenors of the first quarter of the 20th century.
Gigli studied in Rome, and, after winning a competition at Parma in 1914, he made his debut at Rovigo, Italy, as Enzo in Amilcare Ponchielli’s La gioconda. Following engagements in Spain and South America, he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City (1920) as Faust in Arrigo Boito’s Mefistofele. He remained with the company for 12 seasons. Gigli first appeared in London in 1930 at Covent Garden in Umberto Giordano’s Andrea Chenier. Between 1935 and 1951 he made numerous films in Germany and Italy.
His lyric tenor voice was remarkable for its power, mellowness, and smoothness of production. Although his musical taste had flaws and his acting was somewhat stiff, his natural musicianship and the charm of his voice held operatic audiences. From 1946 he often appeared in opera with his daughter, the soprano Rina Gigli. His last operatic appearance was in 1954, his last concert in 1955.
